Do you have 100’s or maybe even 1,000’s of photos on your phone? Computer? Tablet? It is true what professionals and researchers say, this generation will be the MOST PHOTOGRAPHED, but will have the least amount of recalled memories.
If you are over 25 years old, you may remember, going home to mom and dad’s house, or even grandmas, and going thru old boxes of photos. What happens when you do this?
You start to have memories triggered that were stored deep in your mind. The photos are like a memory recall button. A photo can bring back a memory of a loved one, or a time spent together with friends, or even the smell of the beautifully baked apple pie your grandma used to make. A photo can really freeze time and help you recall those stored memories better. And that my dear, is priceless.
But what would happen if you didn’t have the fun box of photos to look thru. You didn’t have those photos of your bad hair, bad clothes, or the one of your siblings putting underwear on your head(Yes Brenda...Thanks for that!). Would you remember them? Would you easily recall those times spent with family and friends?
Probably most of the time, the answer is no. According to the blog, Psyblog, they say that lost memories can “live” again. It’s not that our brain doesn’t have the ability to store all this information. Memories do not “decay”. They just become harder and harder to revive. A photograph can trigger that revival process and bring those memories to the surface.
It’s all fine and dandy for my generation and the ones prior to me. But lets talk about what is happening to all of our young children and teens now. They (and don’t leave us mom and dads out) take 100’s of photos a week(maybe even a day) on their camera phones. They may post them on social media like Facebook and Instagram, and SnapChat and text back and forth to family and friends.
I love being able to text my mother photos of her grandkids doing something cute. Or a small video of them saying Thank you for their birthday presents. We can connect with each other on such a grand level now and be more involved in each others lives. Technology and social media are amazing for that!
But are any of those photos making it home in the form of a paper copy? Do you have a box of photos waiting to get organized into albums from Christmas, Spring Break, or any other major life moment? Maybe the first time your child walked?
Where are the photos now?
And even in the professional field, many photographers are not even giving their clients the options to have an truly archival medium for those special moments captured, only a digital version. In the end, don't we want to save those moments forever. There really is only 1 type of product that can do that.
A printed photograph.
Don’t get me wrong. I am a professional photographer for more than 8 years and I struggle to get my children’s moments printed on a consistent basis. I do have wall portraits and albums of key sessions in their lives. Newborn photos on the walls in their room, or family portraits in the living room and kitchen. But I have struggled to get all of the moments I capture on my iPhone and real camera printed and stored. I made a promise to myself that I would get their portraits caught up, printed, stored, and albums made by their next birthday(they are both born in March).
So here we are. I’m working on mine. Are you ready to make sure your children have saved childhood memories? Do you want to make sure all your best memories are printed? And really, what would history be if we didn’t have archived photos of events and people?
So are you ready? For the next 8 weeks to get your photo life on track.
I can't promise it will be easy the whole 8 weeks. This process is about changing your habit with photos and photo taking. But, if you follow the steps and be accountable each week, you will make progress!
Please join me over the next 8 weeks as we explore and help you implement how to better organize, edit and print your photos. This will be fairly easy process. Each week we will be discussing a different topic and steps how you can get your photos organized, printed and displayed in your home for your enjoyment everyday.
This process won’t matter if you are a teen and you want to print your moments with your friends or if you are mom of young children who want to remember how they were growing up. Or if you are a parent to older children and want to enjoy photos of your grandkids. No matter what your story is, I want to help you keep those memories alive in PRINTED photographs:)
Today's Assignment: Write down what type of images you need to organize. Are they all digital, mostly boxes of prints, or a combination of both? Then write down how long you have a backlog of photos. Go ahead and leave your answer in the comments. Don't be afraid. I am backlogged a good 10 years. I don't even have all of my son's 1st year done and he turns 9 this March! So I am taking this journey with you.
Below are the topics we will cover each week. If you’d like, you can join my newsletter and stay in the loop that way too! Click HERE to join.
